How to Get NBI Clearance
What is an NBI Clearance?
It is a government certificate provided to an individual upon request so to certify that the individual is cleared and has not been involved in a criminal act. Also, an NBI Clearance can be used for other legitimate identification purposes and is accepted as a valid ID here in the Philippines.
As an NBI clearance is basically a certificate that proves you have no criminal cases filed against you, do know that its scope covers the entire Philippines and its validity period expires only after 6 months to a year for the reason that you might get involved in a criminal case.
What are the Requirements to Have an NBI Clearance?
In the process of getting an NBI Clearance, you will need to present the necessary requirements listed below:
Requirement 1. Any 2 of the following Valid IDs:
- Valid Philippine Passport
- Voter’s ID
- Driver’s License
- SSS ID
- PRC License
- PhilHealth ID
- School ID
- Postal ID
- GSIS UMID
- Tax Identification Number (TIN) ID
- Senior Citizen Card
- NSO Authenticated Birth Certificate
- Alien Certificate of Registration
- Copy of Previous NBI Clearance (if you are to renew and you still have a copy)
Requirement 2. NBI Clearance Fee
An amount of Php 130 is now required as payment for an NBI Clearance so as to comply with Documentary Stamp Tax (DST) rate adjustment.
Requirement 3. Personal Appearance
Your appearance is needed when applying for an NBI Clearance as your photo will be taken, alongside your fingerprint for the biometrics system, so do remember to wear the appropriate attire — a common rule when going to any NBI Office or Branch when claiming your clearance.
Requirement 4. Ballpen
There are some forms you might have to fill out still, so make sure to have a ballpen with you. A black ballpen is preferable.
What are the Steps in Order to Obtain an NBI Clearance?
Step 1. Register your E-Mail Address
Go here and register an account using your existing email account or even your personal email address. This is what you should be able to see:
Step 2. Register as New Account for NBI Clearance Online
If you are a new applicant, make sure to check the “No” box and then proceed to fill out all the required fields. After that, click the “I Accept Terms of Service” box and then click the “Sign Up” box as well to proceed to the next page.
However, if you are not a new applicant and you are here to renew your NBI Clearance, and you still have the old NBI ID number card, then go and check the “Yes” box. After that, proceed to fill out the required fields and then click the “Proceed” button to go to the next page.
Step 3. Put in your One Time Password (OTP)
Once you are done with your NBI Clearance registration online, a One Time Password (OTP) will be sent to the email or cellphone number you put in during your registration. The OTP is a code that is to be used in confirming you are not a robot as well as to protect your personal information. This code can only be used once and cannot be reused again after 5 minutes.
If you don’t receive your OTP or your 5 minutes has lapsed already, you can try to re-send it again; just make sure that the mobile number and email address you put in is correct and existing.
Step 4. Application Information
Once you have entered, your OTP, you will be brought to your account in which you need to fill out the Application Form. Fill out all the fields. Make sure to not miss anything, and then click the “Save Information” button.
After clicking the “Save Information” box, you will then be seeing a summary of all the information you input. Make sure to read and double check the information you have provided. If you found any error, do not worry, because you still could edit it by clicking the “Edit” button. Once done, click the “Apply for Clearance” button.
Step 5. Valid ID Presentation
After clicking the “Apply for Clearance” button, a message will pop up, asking you which Valid ID are you to present on your appointment. You can check the list of accepted Valid IDs we have mentioned above and choose from there. After entering a chosen Valid ID that you have, click the “I Agree” button.
Step 6. Schedule your Appointment
This is the part in which you will be scheduling your appointment. Here you will select which NBI branch you want to request your NBI Clearance from. Many people choose an NBI Clearance Branch near them as that is the most convenient for them – you can also do that if you want. Once you have settled for a branch, you can now also choose the Date and Time of your appointment, depending on the available slots.
Step 7. NBI Clearance Payment Transaction
After scheduling your appointment to your chosen NBI Clearance Branch, you will be able to see the amount of your NBI Clearance, Appointment Schedule, and the different types of options on the right side of the schedule screen.
If you are to choose Bayad Center or 7-Eleven as your payment option, do know that a a message will pop up containing the reference number alongside the total amount you have to pay. Make sure to take down the reference number as you will present it to the branch of payment option you selected.
Once you are done paying your NBI Clearance fee via your selected payment option, you can check the status of your NBI Clearance if it has changed from “Pending” to “Paid”.
Step 8. Personal Appearance
When your scheduled appointment date comes, all you have to do is go to your chosen NBI Clearance Branch. Don’t forget to bring at least 2 Valid IDs, the NBI Clearance Online Reference Number you took note of, and of course, your Payment Receipt.
Once you arrive at your appointment, ask an NBI personnel about the guidelines and process as they will be the one to assist you in regards to capturing your photo and biometrics for your NBI Clearance.
After all that, what you have to do is just wait until your NBI Clearance gets printed and your name called.
*There are instances when your request for an NBI Clearance and you get a “Hit” status. Do know that this can cause a delay in releasing your NBI Clearance.
Getting a Hit status means a criminal case or warrant of arrest is filed under your name or under the name of someone that has the same name as you. You need not to worry if you know to yourself that you don’t have any criminal liability. Do not fret, too, as your NBI Clearance will be released still, you just have to wait for further instructions as people who has a Hit status will have to undergo NBI Quality Control in order to verify and prove that they are not the person with the criminal case.
However, people who really have a criminal case will be guided accordingly and they could also ask for the lawyer conducting the Quality Control Interview.
